Wappen-Schornsheim

Schornsheim, with actually 1.632 inhabitants, lies conveniently between the Federal Highway B420 and the National  Highway A63. The community was officially mentioned for the first time in a deed of gift of Karl the Great to the cloister of Hersfeld. And it was the cloister of Schornsheim, where “The Holy Lioba”, niece of Boniface, spent the eve of her life. A statue of her, close to the village fountain, still reminds us of the presence of one of the outstanding women of early Middle Ages right here in Schornsheim. The catholic church “St. Wigbert” with interesting mural paintings is also worthwhile visiting.

Modern Schornsheim offers a kindergarten, a primary school and a special room for young people to meet, a doctor, a bank and shops as well. It is always with special pride that the people living here talk about their village shop. It is a shop whith a wide range of food mainly out of the region and other things of vital necessity and the people of Schornsheim run it themselves according to their own requirements.

Numerous sports facilities contribute to the attractive living standard in the village – as there are a sports ground, a multi-purpose hall, a gymnasium and  two tennis-courts.

Within the framework of a national campaign for more beautiful villages Schornsheim has already won various titles.

It is always the 4th weekend in September that Schornsheim celebrates its kermis.
